RECYCLE Shorai LiFePO4 BATTERIES
LiFePO4 batteries such as used within Shorai Battery products do not contain any heavy metals. As such some municipalities do allow them to be disposed of in regular garbage, if fully discharged. However, we would much prefer that our batteries be recycled.
The battery should be fully discharged before disposal or recycling. This can be accomplished several ways. One convenient method is to have the battery in the vehicle and simply turn on the ignition switch, lights and any available accessory load like heated grips. This will typically empty the battery in an hour or two at most. Other methods include using a 12V compressor with alligator clips, or rigging up a 12V bulb.
After having fully discharged the battery, do be sure to heavily tape up the positive and negative terminals as an added precaution.
Fortunately, there are many options these days for local drop off recycling locations. Lowe's and Home Depot typically have a bin for Lithium Battery Recycling located near their customer service / returns counters. You can also search for an "E -Waste Recycler" locally, or find a nearby e-waste drop-off station HERE
